VALUING GOODWILL CORRECTLY CAN SAVE TAX

  • Stamp duty is no longer payable on the transfer of goodwill after 23 April 2002.

  • The 2002 Finance Act brought in tax relief for companies on the amortisation of Goodwill acquired after 31st March 2002. Tax relief can now be enjoyed on Goodwill acquired.

  • Any profit arising on the disposal of goodwill will be taxed in the company on an income basis, although there may be scope to defer this.

The valuation of goodwill has become more important than ever. The Inland Revenue will almost certainly look at any valuation. In view of the importance now attached to getting the Goodwill valuation correct, Hansons Tax Consultants offer a Valuation service. Get the value wrong and you could be paying thousands in extra tax.
