Important dates during the tax year
 
April 6/7 Tax Returns, or notices to submit a Return, for the tax year ended on the previous 5th April issued by the Inland Revenue.
July 31 Second interim payment for the tax year ended on the previous 5th April should reach the Collector of Taxes (the first interim payment should have been paid by the previous January 31).
September 30 Tax Returns submitted in a paper format should have reached the Inland Revenue for them to guarantee they will calculate your liability and tell you what to pay by the following 31st January. Also, if you are employed, and you want any underpayment of tax (up to £2,000) for the tax year ended on the previous 5th April to be collected by an adjustment to your Coding Notice for the tax year starting on the following 6th April, the Tax Return should be submitted by this date.
December 29 Tax Returns submitted electronically should have reached the Inland Revenue for them to guarantee they will calculate your liability and tell you what to pay by the following 31st January. January 31 Final date for filing Tax Returns in any format for the tax year ended on the previous 5th April; if the Tax Return was issued less than three months before this date, the time limit is extended to three month after the date of issue. There is a £100 penalty for late filing.
January 31 Balancing payment for the tax year ended on the previous 5th April and first interim payment for the tax year ending on the following 5th April should reach the Collector of Taxes.
March 1 Any balance of tax for the tax year ended on the previous 5th April not paid by this date will attract a 5% surcharge. A second 5% surcharge will arise if any tax is still unpaid on the following 1st August.
